Ha Long guide

Located in the north of the country, in the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay is located about 300 kilometers from the capital of the country, Hanoi.

Halong Bay or Halong Bay - as it is internationally termed - is an extension of 1,500 km2 of water. In it, more than 2,000 islands and islets of karstic stone rise, as well as caves that can only be accessed by water.

Its importance is such that in 1994 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also considered, since 2011, as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. So, if you are thinking of traveling to Vietnam, visiting Halong Bay is a must to discover one of the most emblematic and iconic places in the country.

What to do in Ha Long

In your visit to Halong Bay we recommend visiting some of its more than 2,000 islands and islets and caves. We tell you what to see in Halong Bay so you can discover the places of interest that you can visit during your route through Halong:

Sung Sot Cave

The Sung Sot cave is one of the most recognized in Halong Bay. Its dimensions are very extensive, with three huge rooms that can be visited. To access it you only have to climb thirty stairs that go directly to the entrance of the cave.

Inside you can see stalactites, stalagmites and different karst formations. One of the most venerated by the locals is a rock in the shape of a turtle, to which both tourists and the Vietnamese themselves leave offerings.

Thien Canh Son Cave

Another recommended stop during your visit to Halong Bay is the Thien Canh Son cave. This small jewel is of much smaller dimensions than the famous Sung Sot cave, but inside it also hides impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

To access it the boat will leave you on the shore and you can enter it through some stairs that also offer views of the bay. It is usually a less crowded cave than that of Sung Sot.

Cat Ba Island

If you want to visit the largest island in Halong Bay you should visit Cat Ba Island, where there is a national park under the same name. The island of Cat Ba is home to some 14,000 people and a multitude of species, such as langur, currently in danger of extinction. In Cat Ba you can also taste some of the typical dishes of the area, especially based on crustaceans and fish.

Other islands and caves that you will see during your visit to Halong Bay are:

Thien Can Son Cave
Tam Cung Cave

Visiting Halong Bay is also discovering the life of those who inhabit it. During the cruise around the bay you can go on a bamboo raft or kayak trip to see the Vung Vieng Fishing Village, one of the Vietnamese communities that live in the area. Over the years the Vietnamese have been building small houses and even a school on the waters of the bay. The population that lives in Halong survives thanks to fishing.

Take a kayak trip
Apart from a cruise in Halong Bay, another option that we recommend to complement your tour is to take a kayak trip.

The waters of the bay are usually calm and perfect for a kayak excursion, which will allow you to visit some places of Halong Bay on your own and discover the places that interest you most, such as caves and lagoons.

Food in Ha Long

In a country where quality dishes abound and where the gastronomic offer is extensive, in Ha Long, they return a little to the origins, through classic and simple dishes.

The island is not exempt from the usual Vietnamese cuisine, but logically the fact of being anchored in the middle of the ocean, makes most of its cuisine is based on seafood and is the main base to eat at Cat Ba.

Crab, seafood, all kinds of fish, grilled, with sauces, steamed etc ... we can taste on the island, leaving a little aside, noodles, rice and spring rolls, which will accompany us the rest of the way.

The prices more than affordable will not be an impediment to appreciate another part of the extensive gastronomy of Vietnam.

Vietnamese culinary art is well known and as in all of Southeast Asia, food is part of the experience.

Very tasty dishes with fresh foods, are part of the things to eat in Cat Ba and throughout the country.
