Vung Tau, also known by its French name as Cap St. Jacques, had its origins in a fishing village that during the Vietnam War, was used by American soldiers as a place to spend their days off between battle and battle. After the war ended the Westerners left and the town returned to tranquility, being a village of humble fishermen again.

What to do in Vung Tau
There are two hills in the city, where you can walk or even go by car. One of the hills has a lighthouse at the top, from where you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and the beaches. At the top there is also a statue of Jesus, similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro.
The statue is surrounded by gardens, and it is a quite peaceful place, but you must remember that you have to dress in a respectful way if you want to enter inside the statue. A shirt is enough, but you should avoid wearing shorts.
Inside the statue there are steps that go up to reach the arms, from where there are incredible views. You can not carry any bag inside the statue, because when you climb the stairs it narrows. Keep your valuables in your pockets and you can take a camera with you. You can leave your bags outside the statue, the security guard will watch them.
There are very nice beaches in Vung Tau, although during the weekends they are full of people, since many inhabitants of Saigón visit them. From the port you will see many fishing boats arrive in the early morning, and during the night everything is illuminated.
